VISWA LAB:
Bunker oil testing

Viswa Lab was established in 1991 and today they are testing 3.750 fuel oil samples every month, in addition to about 200 lube oil samples in their laboratories in Houston and Singapore. The samples are collected from 4.000 ships from 350 owners world-wide. Viswa Lab is only working for fuel users and NOT fuel suppliers in order to avoid conflict of interests.

Viswa Lab returns the analysis results on the same day it receives the samples. Viswa Lab is offering a package service and has established itself as a problem solving lab specializing in Total Fuel Management (TFM). The basis for this is a six levels testing:

1. Bunker fuels – Identifying and quantifying contaminants / adulterants

2. Advisory and support services for Condition Based Maintenance program (CBM)

3. Advisory and support services for condition monitoring

4. Quantification on fuel quality and fuel worth to help with fuel purchase

5. Advisory and support services for monitoring and manipulation of machinery performance

6. Advisory and support services for energy management.

Mr. Nelson Susa from Viswa Lab is currently in Norway and will visit clients between Oslo and Stavanger this week.

If you want a meeting with him and the representative from Ulrik Qvale & Partners AS, Mr. Markus Mork, please call 9082 8384 or make contact to our office for more info

COSCO Shipyard Group Co., Ltd:

All of the Cosco Shipyards are currently very busy with big projects, both newbuildings and conversions. Even the new yard at Lianyungang (see http://www.uqp.no/Cosco-Group/cos_dal.html ) will have the first two conversions starting up in August and September respectively.

In the last PandaNews on page 3 (see http://www.uqp.no/Cosco-Group/News/2008-05-27%20Panda%20News.pdf ) you can read about the EIDE BARGE 33 being converted at the Cosco (Zhoushan) Shipyards, as well as about the M/T FRONT COMOR being converted from a Suesmax tanker to a heavy-lift vessel.

Cosco (Guangzhou) Shipyard has changed name to Cosco (Guangdong) Shipyard. This is because the yard now has two locations in the Guangdong province. In the new location they are currently building the first 57.000 dwt bulk-carrier and together with 3 big conversion-jobs.

Cosco has also acquired a new shipyard in the Hainan island in South China and the plan for this yard is to do only normal ship-repairs.

HongKong United Dockyards Ltd:

HongKong United Dockyards Ltd (HUD) can dock vessels up to 42 m beam. Earlier this year the yard had a 100 tons steel job on a vessel.

HUD docks a number of container-vessels every year, vessels that are very dependent on high quality and precise re-delivery. However, the yard now more and more receive inquiries for other types of vessels ,

At the moment the yard can offer some slots in September and October due to sudden changes in their program.

For more info, see http://www.uqp.no/HUD/index.htm

LISNAVE:

The dock-situation at Lisnave now is

  • for the big docks tight until 20th November
  • for the panmax-docks some space from end of September

The yard also sent out a press-release saying: Increase in business volumes at Lisnave

Due to the continuing increase in world demand, Portugal’s Lisnave has reported intense ship repair activity during the first six months of 2008. A total of 66 vessels were contracted during the period for maintenance/repair works. Business volumes increased by 55% in the period, representing a significant increase in the work carried out on each vessel. During this period Lisnave carried out repairs onboard all types of vessels, including tankers, bulk carriers, containerships, general cargo vessels, LPG tankers and passenger ships.

Of the 66 ships repaired, a total of 46 shipowners/managers from 26 countries were represented. Singapore owners/managers supplied 10 projects, 10 came from Germany, nine from Greece, four from Denmark and four from UK. This clearly illustrates Lisnave competitiveness in the global ship repair market.

Lisnave has always had a fine reputation for repeat business – this period seeing such work coming from Singapore’s AET Shipmanagement, Greece’s OSG, Tsakos and Euronav, Germany’s Columbia Shipmanagement and Ernst Jacob, Denmark’s Torm Shipmanagement, Egypt’s AMPTC, and Norway’s V.Ships Group, BW Gas, and Kristian Gerhard Jebsen.

Three major repair projects were carried out during this period. Sovcomflot’s 26,424 dwt LNG tanker SCF Tomsk entered the shipyard after sustaining severe damage during bad weather in the Caribbean Sea. A total of 800 tons of bottom steel was renewed and repairs were also carried out on the shaft line.

V Ships (France)’s 279,864 dwt VLCC New Vision also suffered weather damage in the North Atlantic, and underwent repairs to her rudder, rudder stock and steering gear.

The offshore pipe-laying barge Hercules was in the yard for extensive internal and external painting treatment, propeller maintenance and renewal of structural steel.

Looking ahead to the second half of the year, the orderbook appears no less favourable with a total of 45 vessels already contracted. These included multi-vessel bookings from Euronav, Unicom, Novoship, Wallem Shipmanagement, OSG, AP Moller, Tsakos Shipping, MOL, PDVSA, Chemikalien, and Brostrom.
